GEDDES’ LIFE AND WORK
ORIGINS AND BOYHOOD
Patrick Geddes was born in in Ballater, a small town in the north-east of Scotland where his father’s regiment was garrisoned to guard Balmoral Castle. He was baptised with the name of Peter, but his family soon started calling him Patrick or more commonly Pat.
Patrick’s father served for over 20 years in the Black Watch and for another 20+ years as an officer in the militia. His mother had her own income as a teacher in the regimental school. His two brothers did very well, one as Manager of the Land Bank of Mexico and retiring at 42, the other as a dealer in coffee and spices in New Zealand.
Captain Geddes and his son enjoyed walks in the countryside, exploring the surrounding hills collecting specimens of wild ferns and flowers for their garden. Patrick developed an interest in observing nature’s wonders which lasted all of his life. The Tay valley view from nearby Kinnoull Hill was an inspiration for the “Valley Section”.
He attended the Perth Academy when he was about eight years old. His teachers said that he was an eager but restless pupil. According to biographer Philip Boardman, he was reading eight to ten books
Patrick Geddes: A major figure in Scotland's cultural history
Allan Ramsay’s anthology The Ever Green () brought back William Dunbar and other poets from the 15th and 16th centuries to an 18th-century readership, so when Patrick Geddes published an essay in his journal The Evergreen in calling for a “Scottish Renascence” and in Hugh MacDiarmid took up that call, a connection was established back from MacDiarmid, through Geddes, via Ramsay, to Dunbar, Henryson and the old Scots Makars.

The crucial figure here is Patrick Geddes. And the point about his work is that it’s unfinished. Or better, ongoing. The Geddes Centre at Riddle’s Court, Hugh Street, Edinburgh EH1 2PD (check the websites and ) is hosting a gathering on Thursday linking Scotland, France and India. It’s free but ticketed.
It promises an exceptional introduction to the work of the Geddes Trust, and what the international legacy of this phenomenal man continues to be.
Why bother? In an age of crass commercialism, the arts are disadvantaged, partly because the training needed to help us comprehend them is so vulnerable.

Early Life
Sir Patrick Geddes was born in in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, but grew up and spent his childhood years in Perth beside the River Tay. He loved nature and spent hours and hours botanising on Kinnoull Hill. His exploration of the Perthshire countryside was the catalyst that started his love of the natural world.
Geddes later studied botany at Edinburgh University, but this only lasted a week! He disliked the formal teaching of a study that he had already become familiar with, so he instead chose to study botany and zoology with different mentors in London, including Thomas Henry Huxley, a contemporary and friend of Charles Darwin. Patrick Geddes is also known as &#;Father of Modern Town Planning&#;. Sir Patrick Geddes was a Scottish biologist, sociologist, geographer, philanthropist and pioneering town planner. He is known for his innovative thinking in the fields of urban planning and sociology.
He introduced the concept of "region" to architecture and planning and coined the term "conurbation". Geddes developed a new approach to regional and town planning based on the integration of people and their livelihood into the environmental givens of the particular place and region they inhabit. Geddes illustrated the section using the locally available landscapes of Edinburgh and its hinterland. The Geddes Plan for Tel Aviv was the first master city plan for Tel Aviv.
