Saint mungo biography

Mungo

In the year AD, a boy was born in Fife, Scotland. He was not born to royalty or nobility. His mother was banished and became a saint herself. This child grew to become St. Mungo, the beacon of light that shone over Glasgow. Through this article, I'll take you on a spiritual journey through Mungo's life.

Who was Mungo?

Mungo, also known as St. Kentigern, was a missionary of the Scottish people during the early Christian period. He is the patron saint and founder of the city of Glasgow. His mother, St. Theneva, was the daughter of a British prince who was cast adrift in a coracle after she refused to abandon her Christian faith. She washed ashore on the Scottish coastline, where Mungo was born and raised by St. Serf, a hermit.

Early Life

Mungo's childhood was marked by religious instruction under St. Serf. An interesting story from his early life is when he restored the life of St. Serf's pet robin. Hence, he's often depicted with a bird, symbolizing this miracle.

Miracles of Mungo

Known for four miracles associated with him, St. Mungo nurtured the faith of people with divine interventions. These are collectively referred as the "Four miracles of Glasgow".

Our father among the saintsKentigern of Glasgow (in Latin: Cantigernus and in Welsh: Cyndeyrn Garthwys or Kyndeyrn), also known as Saint Mungo, was a late sixth century missionary to the Brythonic Kingdom of Strathclyde. He is a patron saint of the city of Glasgow that he founded. St. Kentigern is venerated as the Apostle of what is now northwest England (including Cumbria and the Lake District) and southwest Scotland. He feast day is commemorated on January 14 in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and on January 13 in the West. He also has associations with figures from Arthurian legends, having lived in that time of transition between post-Roman Celtic Britain to pagan Anglo-Saxon domination of the island. A contemporary of St. Columba of Iona, he reposed not long after the papal Augustinian mission to Anglo-Saxon England. Saint Mungo according to tradition founded a number of churches during his period as hierarch of Strathclyde, of which Stobo Kirk is a notable example. In Scotland he is considered a patron saint of those needing help against bullies, of those accused of infidelity, and of salmon.

&#;Legend of St Mungo

The Glasgow coat of arms relate to the life and legend of St Mungo. The arms include 'the tree that never grew' relating to St Mungo tending a fire in St Serf's monastery but he fell asleep and some lads who were envious of Mungo's favoured position with St Serf put out the fire while he slept. When Mungo woke he broke off branches from a frozen hazel tree and by praying over them and lit the fire again, the hazel branches were transformed in to a fully grown tree. The 'bird that never flew' is about a robin that had been tamed by St Serf and it had been accidently killed. Mungo prayed over the robin and brought it back to life.  The 'fis
