In , Chika obtained an MA in English from the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL), and then earned a PhD from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, in , for her dissertation entitled "In the Shadow of Ala: Igbo Women Writing as an Act of Righting". She spent two years in Seattle from to , but otherwise lived in Belgium until That year, she and her family moved to the Atlanta area in the USA, where she now resides.
Chika's first published works were collections of poems: Tear Drops () and Born in Nigeria (). She continued writing poetry until , but soon started to focus on writing fictional and non-fictional prose. Her short stories earned her several awards and distinctions, including the BBC Short Story Competition

Chika Nina Unigwe is a Nigerian-born, Igbo author who writes in English and Dutch. In April she was selected for the Hay Festivals Africa39 list of 39 Sub-Saharan African writers aged under 40 with potential and talent to define future trends in African literature. Previously based in Belgium, she now lives in the United States.

Welcome Chika Unigwe was born in Nigeria in She is the author of four novels, The Phoenix(), On Black Sisters' Street(), Night Dancer() and The Black Messiah(, published only in Dutch translation so far).
