Fray Juan de Zumárraga ( – )
Nació en Durango, España en y murió en la ciudad de México el 3 de junio de Religioso franciscano. Fue el primer obispo de la diócesis de la ciudad de México y el primer Arzobispo de México.
Para su nombramiento como obispo de México, fue presentado directamente por el Rey Carlos I en diciembre de , quien además le otorgó el título de "protector de los indios". Llegó a México en antes de consagrarse como Obispo. Las Bulas de erigieron canónicamente el obispado de la ciudad de México y en Zumárraga fue consagrado obispo en Valladolid.
Los primeros años de su prelacía fueron de constante conflicto con el poder civil en cabeza de la Real Audiencia de Nuño Beltrán. Ejerció oposición y logró reversar varias de sus disposiciones al considerar que eran excesivas y violaban los derechos de los indios.
Fundó los colegios de Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco y San Juan de Letrán, creó el primer hospital, al que nombró hospital de Amor de Dios. Fue fundador de la Real y Pontificia Universidad de México, actualmente Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Fundó en el Convento de San Francisco de la Ciudad
Zumárraga, Juan de (c. –)
Juan de Zumárraga (b. ca. ; d. 3 June ), first bishop (–) and archbishop (–) of Mexico. Fray Juan de Zumárraga was born in Durango, near Bilbao, Spain; his birthdate is unknown but he was said to have been over eighty at death. Impressed by Zumárraga's campaign against alleged Basque witches, Charles V appointed him bishop of Mexico City. Zumárraga arrived in Mexico in as bishop-elect and Protector of the Indians. Zumárraga went to Spain in to report to the emperor; he was consecrated as bishop there in In Zumárraga joined forces with Don Antonio de Mendoza, newly arrived first viceroy, to stabilize colonial rule and promote Indian education and Christianization. In they founded the Colegio de Santa Cruz, a Franciscan college for indigenous nobles. Zumárraga imported a printing press in and authored or sponsored a number of imprints, including Erasmian tracts. Zumárraga's thinking, typical of Spanish Franciscans, combined Renaissance humanism with mysticism and militant religious zeal. Actuó decisivamente en la formación religiosa de la Nueva España tras la conquista. Construyó la Catedral, el Colegio de Tlatelolco, introdujo la imprenta y realizó una gran labor evangelizadora. Ingresó en la provincia franciscana de la Concepción a través del convento del Abrojo, situado cerca de Valladolid, del que fue Guardián.
