Michelle Singletary-Twyman, RN, is the Division Director of Operations at Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health (DSAMH) and executive sponsor for DTRN/Bamboo Intelligence Hub™, a care coordination platform for behavioral health. She joined DSAMH in as the Chief of Community Mental Health, and in , she was subsequently promoted to Deputy Director. She also has a long, rich and successful history as a registered nurse in the behavioral health field too. Michelle has spent 20+ years in the private sector as the Director of Medical Services for residential programs in Delaware (DE) and New Jersey. She also worked in private psychiatric hospitals in DE and Pennsylvania as the Chief Nursing Officer and as the Director of Performance Improvement and Risk Management. Prior to becoming a State of Delaware employee, she ran a crisis response center in West Philadelphia.

Then she served the shrunken version a month later—at her 4-year-old son’s party.
She’s not embarrassed about that. Or about delving deep into her fiance’s finances before they got married. Or re-wrapping toys from the bottom of the toy bin for her young kids at Christmas.
Why should she be? Singletary spent the first four years of her life hungry and neglected by her birth parents, before being taken in by her grandmother, a nurse’s assistant who never made more than $13, a year. There, she had exactly what she needed and not much more—not an extra pair of sneakers from the grocery store bin for school or another serving of fried chicken and pinto beans at dinnertime.

“You can become a (k) millionaire,” my husband and I recently told our year-old daughter.
That statement perked her up and helped us start a discussion on contributing to her first (k). It’s a conversation we’ve been eager to have since she started working full time.
After getting her undergraduate degree, our daughter Olivia decided to go straight to graduate school to get a master’s in social work. Once she completed her studies, she worked for a nonprofit group in a low-paying internship for 14 months. She started her first full-time job earlier this year and – after a probationary period – she is now eligible to contribute to her company’s workplace retirement plan.
Although we’ve been having preliminary talks about her need to save right away for retirement, this was it – her first (k). Once she received the information packet, my husband and I sat down with her to figure out how much she should contribute to her retirement plan.
Our talk involved four major questions she had about this next phase of her financial life.
