Meles Zenawi (m&#;&#;l&#;s z&#;n&#;&#;w&#;), &#;, Ethiopian political leader, prime minister of Ethiopia (&#;), b. Adwa. After two years of medical studies at the Univ. of Addis Ababa, he helped found () the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), becoming its secretary-general in In he became chairman of the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), a coalition of opposition groups in which the TPLF was the leading constituent. Following the defeat of the military regime in , Meles was elected transitional president; prime minister after , he began his fourth term in and served until his death. Faced with a moribund economy, he spearheaded its rapid development, encouraging both domestic growth and foreign investment while solidifying ties with the West. Meles was widely criticized, however, for his extreme repression of dissent, particularly after the and elections, which were marked by opposition accusations of fraud.

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi was born on 8th May in Adwa, Tigray, in northern Ethiopia, to an Ethiopian father from Adwa and a mother from Adi Quala, Eritrea. He received elementary education at the Queen of Sheba Junior Secondary School and completed his High School in In , he then joined the Medical Faculty of Haile Selassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) where he studied medicine for two years.

A pre-medical student, he interrupted his university studies in , to join the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) which was set up when the student Tigraean National Organization decided to launch armed struggle against the military dictatorship, the Derg, in February His first name at birth was "Legesse".
