Overview
The act of translation, Tejaswini Niranjana maintains, is a political action. Niranjana draws on Benjamin, Derrida, and de Man to show that translation has long been a site for perpetuating the unequal power relations among peoples, races, and languages. The traditional view of translation underwritten by Western philosophy helped colonialism to construct the exotic other as unchanging and outside history, and thus easier both to appropriate and control.
Scholars, administrators, and missionaries in colonial India translated the colonized peoples literature in order to extend the bounds of empire. Examining translations of Indian texts from the eighteenth century to the present, Niranjana urges post-colonial peoples to reconceive translation as a site for resistance and transformation.

Tejaswini Niranjana(born 26 July ) is an Indian professor, cultural theorist, translator and author. She is best known for her contribution to the fields of culture studies, gender studies, translation, and ethnomusicology(particularly relating to different forms of Indian music). She is the daughter of Kannada playwright and novelist Niranjanaand writer Anupama Niranjana. Her partner is Indian author and cultural theorist, Ashish Rajadhyaksha.In , Tejaswini Niranjana was awarded the American Literary Translators Association Prizefor Prose Fiction Translation for ''No Presents Please,'' a translation of author Jayant Kaikini's short stories centred around the city of Mumbai. Tejaswini Niranjana is Director, Centre for Inter-Asian Research, and Dean, Online Programmes. Before coming to Ahmedabad University, she was Professor and Head, Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong, and Director, Centre for Cultural Research and Development. She is co-founder of the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore, which offered an innovative inter-disciplinary PhD programme from During , she headed the Centre for Indian Languages in Higher Education at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and was Indian-language advisor to Wikipedia. Professor Niranjana is the author of Siting Translation: History, Post-structuralism and the Colonial Context (University of California Press, ), Mobilizing India: Women, Music and Migration between India and Trinidad (Duke UP, ), and Musicophilia in Mumbai: Performing Subjects and the Metropolitan Unconscious (Duke UP, ).
