Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher,LG, OM, DStJ, PC, FRS, (néeRoberts; 13 October – 8 April ), was a British politician and stateswoman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from to and Leader of the Conservative Party from to She was the first female British prime minister and the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century. As prime minister, she implemented economic policies that became known as Thatcherism. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style.
Thatcher studied chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, and worked briefly as a research chemist, before becoming a barrister. She was elected Member of Parliament for Finchley in Edward Heath appointed her Secretary of State for Education and Science in his – government. In , she defeated Heath in the Conservative Party leadership election to become Leader of the Opposition, the first woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom.

Margaret Thatcher (nee Margaret Roberts) was born in in England. Her father owned two local grocery stores, which is where she first developed her business sense. The young Margaret had a strict religious upbringing. She studied chemistry and then law at university. She was Britain’s Prime Minister from to Her tough style earned her the nickname “The Iron Lady”.
Thatcher became a politician after winning an election in London in She served as Britain's Education Secretary from to Thatcher became Britain’s first female Prime Minister in She privatised many of Britain’s state-owned companies and had long battles with labour unions. She lowered taxes and inflation and greatly cut government spending.
She was very busy with her foreign policy. Britain fought and won the Falklands War against Argentina in She forged close ties with the USA and had a warm relationship with President Ronald Reagan.

The command economy required in wartime conditions had habituated many people to an essentially socialist mentality. Within the Armed Forces it was common knowledge that left-wing intellectuals had exerted a powerful influence through the Army Education Corps, which as Nigel Birch observed was "the only regiment with a general election among its battle honours". At home, broadcasters like J.B. Priestley gave a comfortable yet idealistic gloss to social progress in a left-wing direction. It is also true that Conservatives, with Churchill in the lead, were so preoccupied with the urgent imperatives of war that much domestic policy, and in particular the drawing-up of the agenda for peace, fell largely to the socialists in the Coalition Government. Churchill himself would have liked to continue the National Government at least until Japan had been beaten and, in the light of the fast-growing threat from the Soviet Union, perhaps beyond then. But the Labour Party had other thoughts and understandably wished to come into its own collectivist inheritance.
