Its a strange thought trying to define the importance of a player.
Mal Meninga is one of the greatest players of all time. You know the usual biographical information. The only 4 time Kangaroo tourist. 3 time NSWRL premier. Played in 10 grand finals in 14 years of top grade football (winning 5). Captain of Australia, Queensland and the Canberra Raiders for what felt like my entire childhood (and research reveals was only 4, 3, and 6 years). The most games for Australia and the most points for Queensland when he retired. The greatest centre to ever play the game*. The captain and star of the greatest rugby league team ever. The man who brought success to the Raiders, and a soul to Canberra. There was simply nothing in Rugby League he didnt achieve.
Shit I didnt even mention his success coaching Queensland, or the fact that as coach of the Raiders his sides won 53 per cent of their games, which would be ahead of most current NRL coaches.
But even all that seems to underestimate the man.

His playing career spanned 16 years and countless accolades, and he captained teams at the club, state and national level. He is considered one of the game’s greats, having been inducted as a Rugby League Immortal.
In he joined the Gold Coast Titans as High Performance Senior Advisor, and has been influential in building the young club’s culture and vision, and driving sustainable success.
He is also director and co-founder of First Nations business Regional Economic Solutions, consulting with both government and non-government organisations to drive Indigenous leadership and engagement.
Mal has also been honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia, an Australian High Achiever of The Year, and has been inducted into both the Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame, Sport Australia Hall of Fame and is a proud Australian South Sea Islander.

Malcolm Norman Mal Meninga is a former player and coach in the Australian professional rugby league. He had a year playing career and appeared in over first-grade games for state, club, and country. He is a renowned goalkeeper and one of the greatest footballers of the twentieth century. He is the only player to be chosen for four Kangaroo Tours, two of which he captained. When he was a member of the unbeaten teams known as The Invincibles and The Unbeatables that toured in and , he gained even more fame and recognition. He appeared in 46 games for Australia and scored points, including 21 tries and 99 goals. He has also captained all of the teams for which he has played, and Australia has only lost six of the 46 tests in which he has appeared.
