One of the most consequential models of the 20th century can’t remember a specific moment when she felt beautiful.
“When you&#;re a warrior, you ain&#;t got time to be worrying about things like that,” said Bethann Hardison, “A warrior isn&#;t beautiful.”
Hardison spoke with me via Zoom recently about Invisible Beauty, the new documentary that she made with Frédéric Tcheng about her life and work as a model, agent, and most of all, advocate for racial diversity in modeling, creating a path for people such as Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Beverly Johnson, and Iman.
She’s donned all kinds of sartorial artworks and made them sing. But as for feeling beautiful, or remembering her outfits? There were few moments of note, save, perhaps, for her first and second weddings.

“I&#;m not insecure about what I look like,” Hardison said. She just never experienced seeing herself in the mirror and feeling a gush of self-satisfaction.

Alison Stewart: Bethann, what is one of your earliest memories of fashion or style, something or someone you saw and you just knew that style?
Bethann Hardison: Oh, that's the neighborhood. I grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant and I think that seeing the men on the corners talking stuff, looking at their double-pleated pants, wingtip shoes, their shirts. No matter what it was, everybody looks cool. What they didn't, there were a lot of fun. It was just a great moment.

Born and raised in New York, Bethann, a latchkey kid, grew up in pre-gentrified Bedford-Stuyvestant. She was raised by her mother and grandmother who were domestics. At the age of 12 she went to live with her father, a supervisor at the Albany Housing Projects in Crown Heights, Brooklyn and a respected orthodox Muslim Imam who was an advisor to Elijah Muhammad as well as a mentor to Malcolm X. After graduating from George W. Wingate High School where she ran track and became the first Black cheerleader, she attended New York University’s Art School and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Despite not completing her degree at either institution, FIT’s merchandising program pointed her toward a career in fashion.
