What was Woodstock?

On The Diversity of Classic Rock, we are celebrating the important year of by publishing posts about the MoonLanding and Woodstock, two important events that happened that year. For the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, we’ll be making a post about The Diversity of Woodstock: Who the musicians are and where they’re from. Let’s get started and talk about The Diversity of Woodstock.

Woodstock doesn’t need much of an introduction. Everyone knows what it is. Three Days of Peace & Music at Yasgur’s dairy farm. A once-off festival that happened on August , which attracted about half a million people (not the largest festival ever though). A lot went wrong: it rained, technical issues, traffic, musicians couldn’t make it, and the organisers of the festival were over $1 million (about $10 million in today’s money) in debt.

Despite that, the festival was known as one of the pivotal moments in pop/rock music history and it was a moment that defined the hippie counterculture movement. The Oscar-winning documentary film Woodstock is worth the watch and the most famous song about the festival was written by Joni Mitchell, a musician who turned down the invite.

Happy birthday

From a YouTube video

Country Joe McDonald had just finished his 9-song solo set at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. Few remember the first 8 songs, but any Woodstock fan remembers the last: Fish Cheer > I-Feel-Like-I&#;m-Fixin&#;-To-Die Rag.

Quite an experience to shout out FUCK four times along with , other people.

Joe over, the people sitting in front of me on that famous field turned and asked if I&#;d ever heard of the next band that Chip Monck had just introduced? I said no.

Neither had , others, but when Santana finished &#;Soul Sacrifice&#; they knew.

Human earthquake

This white suburban middle class kid had never heard such rock and roll. Carlos Santana&#;s guitar playing was amazing, but it was more than that. The beat pounded, but it was more than that, too. Afro-Caribbean?

Three percussionists. That was it! The whole combination of voluminous electricity with three heaving beating hearts

No wonder , people stood, cheered, shouted, stomped, called, whistled, and applauded to create a human earthquake.

Michael Carabello grew up playing the congas on the streets of San Francisco. If Michael hadn’t convinced his rather shy high school friend, Carlos Santana, to merge his blues-influenced guitar with conga drums, there wouldn’t be the Santana sound that remains internationally recognized today for its percussion and guitar work.

Michael was able to perceive and initiate the use of intricate Latin rhythms and percussion into a blues-based rock and roll band. After playing gigs around the city, Santana was suddenly thrust into the limelight by promoter Bill Graham, who insisted that he would only be involved in Woodstock if Santana played.  Santana's show was one of the highlights of the concert and made the band world renowned.

Michael has set the standard for all conga players in rock and roll, world music, and dance music. He set the benchmark that is still firmly in place today. As a result, Michael is the first and only Latin percussionist and conga drummer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with Santana.

After playing on Santana’s first three albums, Michael has gone on to play and record with
