LONG before I was even born, my father Tengku Mohamed Hamzah, the Menteri Besar of Kelantan, had been close to the royal family of Kedah. In the late s, my father used to call on Ayah (Tunku Abdul Rahman) at The Residency whenever he was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Rulers&#; Conference.
As for me, I met Ayah regularly while studying economics at Queen&#;s University in Belfast, when I was also Secretary-General of the Malay Society of United Kingdom.
In February , when I was in my final year reading law at Lincoln's Inn, my father had a fatal stroke, thus forcing my early return to Malaya. My plane took me to Singapore. Ayah was kind enough to have sent a special plane to transport me from Singapore to Kota Bharu.
He asked me to remain in the country and become politically involved in Kelantan. However,
He talked about how the government had failed to respond to the needs of the poor. He talked about how the education system crippled the youth of the nation, allowing them to grow up without the necessary skills needed to be competitive.
Of the socio-economic strategies he said: &#;We cannot comfort ourselves that we have sacrificed growth for social equity. If there is a trade off between growth and equity, we have not made it. We are failing on both counts.&#;
&#;Even if we manage to coast through this downturn, we will emerge with an economy that has failed to gear itself up to the demands of the global economy, fallen yet further behind the developmental path and locked ourselves tighter into a pattern of low growth.&#;
Asked by the audience what can be done to change the present political leadership to one better suited to guide Malaysia through the rocky times ahead, Razaleigh replied: &#;I tried but I failed.&#;

Yang Berhormat Mulia Tengku Tan Sri Razaleigh Bin Tengku Mohd Hamzah (lahir: 13 April ; juga dipanggil Ku Li) merupakan bekas Menteri Kewangan Malaysia () dan Menteri Perdagangan dan Industri (). Beliau merupakan Bekas Naib Presiden dan Bendahari UMNO dalam tahun an. Dalam tahun , setelah permohonan beliau ditolak untuk menyertai sebagai ahli UMNO semula, Tunku Abdul Rahman telah meminta beliau menubuhkan Semangat 46 sebagai satu platform untuk ahli-ahli UMNO Lama juga ditolak permohonan mereka. Beliau telah menjadi Presiden Semangat 46 sehingga ianya dibubarkan pada Kini, beliau merupakan Ahli Parlimen Gua Musang, Kelantan. Di peringkat akar umbi politik, beliau merupakan Ketua UMNO Bahagian Gua Musang. Beliau kini ahli yang paling lama berkhidmat parlimen di Malaysia diikuti oleh Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
