Introduction


Vasco da Gama was born in to a wealthy Portuguese family in Sines, Portugal. Vasco’s father was also an explorer and was supposed to make the epic journey from Portugal to India that would eventually make his son famous. He died, however, before he could successfully complete the journey. In the late s, Portugal was desperately trying to find a sea route to Asia so they could obtain spices for cheap prices. Explorers such as Bartholomeu Dias had made some progress in making the journey, but none had been able to sail around the southern tip of Africa at the Cape of Good Hope (where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans met) and into the Indian Ocean.

Although I am not sure about the rest of the world, most Indians have certainly heard of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who was the first European to arrive on the shores of India by sea.

Along with Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal, Vasco da Gama was responsible for Portugal’s success as an early colonizing power. His voyages and exploits across Africa and Asia have made him one of the most celebrated and famous explorers from the Age of Discovery.

I too grew up hearing and learning about Vasco da Gama and his voyages to India. I grew up hearing about how he was the first explorer to link Europe and Asia by an ocean route, connecting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. I also learned about how his discovery of the ocean route is regarded as a significant milestone in world history as it marked the beginning of a sea-based era of global multiculturalism.

Vida y Obra de Vasco de Gama

Nació en Sines, Portugal en el año de , aunque no se tienen datos exactos, hay escritos que fechan su nacimiento en el año de El puerto de Sines era una pequeña aldea habitada por pescadores, en la costa del Alentejo.

Su padre,  Estêvão da Gama (ca. ), en era caballero de la casa de Fernando de Portugal,  duque de Viseu. De noble linaje y excelente reputación en la Corte. Fue además alcalde de Sines y cumplía importantes asignaciones y responsabilidades en la Corte.

Early Years

Da Gama was born into a noble family around in Sines, Portugal. Little is known about his upbringing except that he was the third son of Estêvão da Gama, who was commander of the fortress in Sines in the southwestern pocket of Portugal. When he was old enough, young da Gama joined the navy, where was taught how to navigate.

Known as a tough and fearless navigator, da Gama solidified his reputation as a reputable sailor when, in , King John II of Portugal dispatched him to the south of Lisbon and then to the Algarve region of the country, to seize French ships as an act of vengeance against the French government for disrupting Portuguese shipping.
