Jorma Puranen
JORMA PURANEN is one on Finland’s most celebrated photographers, known for his Nordic landscapes with a conceptual approach. Considerations of the relationship of past and present are crystallised in Puranen’s work in photography. In his many different yet always equally compelling and precisely executed projects, he has worked in a wide-ranging manner with various historical visual sources since the early s. Puranen’s works highlight the material nature of photography: the grains of the photograph, the relief created by printing ink and light reflected from the surface of a photographic print parallel the original visual motifs and gain a central role. Light reflected from the surface of pictures prevents the viewer from seeing the image as a whole, which in the artist’s thinking is a metaphor of the difficulty of understanding history. The variety of methods offers the viewer a rich visual thicket with a visual idiom that is both challenging and poetic.

Jorma Puranen (born , Helsinki, Finland) explores in his work themes of history, culture, identity and memory, creating a dialogue between the past and the present.
In the series Icy Prospects conceptual images of northern landscapes merge with aspects of mythology, history and the dream-like. The images reflect a place that is borderless, floating in time. 'For fifteen years I have been engaged in landscape related projects in which I have aimed to generally prevent the beholders from the opportunity of directly admiring the scenery by putting something in between them and the subject'. (Jorma Puranen)
With the series, Shadows, reflections and all that sort of thing, Puranen readdresses historical portraits, using 17th and 18th Century paintings as his point of departure. Rather than concentrating on the objects themselves, he studies the reflections, shadows, brushstrokes and cracks on their surfaces; the layers of uncertainty in between the object and the viewer. As he writes, 'Photography's capacity to register reflections is actually its singular gift. What other medium deals so expressively with the play of light and shadow?'

Jorma Puranen has become known for his works that arouse considerations spanning the past and the present. His subject matter has ranged from illustrations of scholarly works and ethnographic photographs to historical portraiture and landscape paintings. With points of departure often found in archives or museums and a rather undisciplined approach to archives — fragmentary rather than systematic. In Puranen’s work, the photograph becomes a place for readdressing a fluid past. His photographs are both of the past and the present. It could be said that reflection as such is Puranen’s theme. In fact, he appears to be saying that light is the only reality to which the photograph has access. In his Icy Prospects series, beginning in , Puranen creatively merges a mixture of mythology, history, and the Nordic fascination that surrounds the notion of polar exploration and the North Pole into his dream-like landscapes. His images reflect a place that is borderless, floating in time, a reminder of the immensity of the unknown that is associated with life above the Arctic Circle. Puranen states: For fifteen years I have been engaged in landscape projects in wh
