Chapter 7

The railway platform in Thabai is a place where the young people meet to talk, gossip, laugh, and flirt. On Sundays girls washed and went to the train, while men just showed up without rituals. All become obsessed with it and did not want to miss it. There is dancing and singing, sometimes fighting. Gikonyo tells Mugo he rarely missed it, and Mugo says the day he missed it was the best day of his life.

Gikonyo reflects on his past. His father, Waruhiu, was a squatter on European farms and was very attractive to women. He would get tired of them and send them along their way, which is what he did to Wangari and their son. Wangari tried to send Gikonyo to school but could not afford it, so he took up carpentry. He was very good at it and loved the wood he worked with. His mother enjoyed watching him work.

Gikonyo wanted to own a piece of land for his mother to settle on, but needed money. He was in love with the beautiful Mumbi but did not think she would ever choose him. Her father Mbugua was a warrior and farmer, and she had two brothers, Kihika and Kariuki; the latter looked up to the former. Gikonyo spent time with them but said little around Mumbi. The

Abstract

This paper responds to and critiques the foregoing paper by O’kubasu: “Ruinous Judicial Activism: What a Solemn Scrutiny of the Ruling of Justice Mumbi Ngugi in the Moses Kasaine Lenolkulal Case Reveals.” The author argues that contrary to the assertions by O’kubasu, the ruling, which barred Lenolkulal from accessing his office, did not seek to have the governor step aside, like other public officers, neither did it remove him from office as contemplated by Article of the Constitution and section 33 of the County Government Act. The condition was/ is reasonable and fits perfectly within Articles 24, 27, 49(1) (h) and 50 of the Constitution and therefore is legal and proper. Having noted the magnitude to which corruption levels have grown, in spite of an impressive array of existing laws and institutions to fight it, and the ascent

Kenya attains Uhuru on December 12, The flags are switched and even though it rains people dance and sing. Everyone waits for something to happen, and someone suggests everyone go to Mugo’s hut, where they stand outside and sing.

The next morning the drizzle becomes a downpour and the wind moans. The sky clears, though, and the celebrations begin. First there are school sports and races. The gloom is palpable until later in the day when a three-mile race is announced. All can take place and the excitement mounts.

Karanja is there even though he got Mumbi’s note, and he prepares to run the race. Mumbi notices him from where she sits with her parents, and is disturbed. Her mind flashes to the night before when Mugo confessed what he had done to Kihika. She does not want anyone to die for her brother.

Gikonyo prepares to race Karanja, seeing that they are rivals again but not sure for what since Mumbi is gone. Karanja remembers the first race and hopes Mumbi cares for him now; perhaps that is why she wrote that note. If he can be with her his life would be complete.

The race starts. Gikonyo is third, passing General R. He believes Mumbi is there to mock h
