Biography of Eusebius, Father of Church History

Known as the Father of Church History, Eusebius created extensive accounts of the first three centuries of Christianity. He preserved a wealth of early documentation that would have otherwise been lost. Eusebius' exhaustive research and painstaking concern for identifying original sources were virtually unprecedented among ancient historians. Without the work of Eusebius, our knowledge of the earliest days of Christianity would be extremely limited, including that of the persecution of the church and the reign of Constantine.

    Eusebius of Caesarea

The passage just quoted shows that the date of Eusebius&#;s birth is more than a merely curious question. According to Lightfoot, it cannot have been &#;much later than A.D. &#; (p. ); according to Harnack, &#;it can hardly be placed later than &#; (Chronologie, I, p. ). The data from which they argue are the persons and events which Eusebius describes as belonging to &#;our own times&#;. Thus, at the end of his account of the epistles of Dionysius of Alexandria, he says he is now going to relate the events of &#;our own times&#; (kath&#; hemas.—H.E., VII, 26). He then recounts how, at Rome, Pope Dionysius () succeeded Xystus, and about the same time Paul of Samosata became Bishop of Antioch. Elsewhere (H. E., V, 28) he speaks of the same Paul as reviving &#;in our own time&#; (kath&#; hemas) the heresy of Artemon. He also speaks of the Alexandrian Dionysius (d. ) in the same way (H. E., III, 28). He calls Manes, whom he places (H. E., VII, 31) during the episcopate of Felix (), &#;the maniac of yesterday and our own times&#; (Theophania, IV, 30). An historian might of course refer to events recent, but before his own birth, as belonging to &#;our own t

    Biography

Born around , Eusebius was a pupil of Pamphilus, himself a disciple of Origen. With Pamphilus, he wrote an Apology for Origen. He fled from the persecutions of Diocletian to the Egyptian desert of Thebaid. Around , he became Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine. At the Council of Nicaea, like many in the East, he distrusted the word homoousios. He condemned Arius, but remained in favour of fairly subordinationist expressions of the faith. In Tyre, he subscribed to Athanasius' deposition. Particularly fascinated by Constantine, the Christian Emperor whom he had met in Nicaea, he contributed to the development of the relationship between Church and state within the framework of an empire whose sovereign is favorable to Christianity. He is seen as the first theorist of Byzantine "caesaropapism". A great scholar, having at his disposal the library of Caesarea inherited from Origen, he is the author of many historical, apologetic, exegetical, and dogmatic works. He died most probably in
