When Ne-Hi emerged in from Logan Square’s raucous basement scene, the band was a microcosm of the neighborhood around it: scrappy, charming, and unabashedly rough around the edges. With new wave guitar riffs and laid-back lyrics, the psych-rockers’ self-titled debut separated them from the pack of indie-rock upstarts trolling the East Room bar.
The foursome’s follow-up, Offers, out February 24 on Grand Jury, finds Ne-Hi succeeding where many of its peers have failed: blending punk rock bona fides with hummable, sophisticated pop music. The opener, “Palm of Hand,” swings with stuttering simplicity. “Prove” glistens with Strokes-style guitar chug from Jason Balla and Mikey Wells. On “Drag,” drummer Alex Otake lays a staccato framework for whiplash guitars and choirboy harmonies, the band’s signature dichotomous sound. In all, the album shows musicians three years older and wiser, having learned to balance the turbulent and the tranquil.

Emerging from underground venues in Chicago's Northwest side, NE-HI made its name on both its live energy and cleverly wrought guitar anthems. On its second album Offers (Grand Jury), the band takes those basement-forged instincts and refines them, lets its guitars explore new angles, and focuses its songwriting. The result shows there are a wide range of post-punk possibilities yet to be explored.
It all started at Animal Kingdom, a flash-in-the-pan DIY basement in Chicago's Logan Square. There, in the summer of , three friends from college, Jason Balla (guitar/vocals), Mikey Wells (guitar/vocals) and James Weir (bass) linked up with drummer Alex Otake to score a buddy's film and decided to start bashing around together as NE-HI. NE-HI's more ambitious sound and heady arrangements broke away from garage rock's back-to-basic's approach. The band's disparate influences--Wire's post-punk, Springsteen's everyman anthems, along with echoes of dreamy atmospheres of Dave Roback's Rain Parade and the jangly buzz of Kiwi pop legends The Clean--began burning through. The band attracted the att

Even though in Chicago we tend to get swept up in the wave of local hip-hop, we also want to spend time to recognize the lush and constantly evolving basement rock scene. With a plethora of young musicians and singers popping up on the music landscape every week, it can be difficult to stay up on it all; especially as genre merging continues to push musical boundaries. It’s important to cover all of the bases when it comes to music, and in that spirit I want to take a moment to recognize one band in particular. The band is called NE-HI, and they’re the next rock band that you need to watch out for.

NE-HI formed to score a friend’s film in the summer of , the foursome—made up of Alex Otake, James Weir, Jason Balla and Mikey Wells—recognized the chemistry between its four members and chose to continue making music.[1] Between that time and their breakup in , the foursome toured the Midwest and East Coast, including a set at the Pitchfork Music Festival. They proved to be a group of promising musicians.[2][3]
Known for their energetic stage presence, NE-HI opened for Car Seat Headrest[4] and the American Wrestlers.[5] NE-HI's self-titled debut album was released in on Manic Static.[6] In the Chicago Tribune, GregKot listed Ne-Hi as #4 in his top ten local indie albums list of the year.[7] Despite being a fairly new band, sites like Noisey,[8] Stereogum,[9] and Paste[10] have taken notice and consider the band to be "the best of what's next".[10]
