Lenah H. Sutcliffe Higbee was a Navy medical pioneer, one of the “Sacred Twenty,” the first group of nurses to become official members of the Navy Nurse Corps.  She was born on May 18, in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada.  She graduated in from nurse’s training at New York Postgraduate Hospital and this same year was married to LTCOL John Henley Higbee, USMC, then worked for a time in private practice before completing further graduate education at Fordham University.

On May 13, , Congress passed legislation allowing for the establishment of the Navy Nurse Corps, the equivalent of the Army Nurse Corps which was established in and had become highly successful.  The Navy required members to be the graduate of an accredited nursing school, between the ages of 22 and 44, and unmarried.  As LTCOL Higbee had died on April 19,, Lenah Higbee was a widow and thus an eligible candidate for the newly established Navy Nurse Corps.  The thirty-six year old Higbee joined with nineteen other females to make up this first group of female Navy nurses who soon became well known as the “Sacre

In January , Higbee (she was the widow of Lieutenant Colonel John Henley Higbee, United States Marine Corps) became the second Superintendent of the Nurse Corps.

Lenah Higbee, a life that deserves to be remembered

Originally Canadian, born May 18, (*1) in New Brunswick, Canada, Lenah Higbee (nee: Sutcliffe), immigrated to the US to attend nursing school at the New York Post Graduate Hospital [now NYU Medical], where she completed her nurse’s certification. She did further graduate study at Fordham University, in the Bronx and she also began her own private nursing practice.

In she met John H Higbee, a widower and retired Marine Lt. Colonel. They courted and were married that year.(*2) He was in service for many years, beginning in , in the US Civil War.

Through marriage Lenah immediately became a naturalized US citizen, by laws at that time (which stood until , when US sentiment turned largely anti-immigrant).  John was approximately three decades older than she.

In April, Lenah became a widow when John passed away.  They had no children, although it’s possible John had children from his earlier marriage.

Born in Chatham, New Brunswick Canada on May 18, , Higbee completed nurses' training at the New York Post-Graduate Hospital in and entered private practice shortly thereafter. She took postgraduate training at Fordham Hospital in New York in Lenah Higbee served in the U.S. Navy from For eleven of her fourteen years of service, Higbee was superintendent of the Navy Corps. Facing continual stalwart resistance and institutionalized discrimination from the male dominated medical community, Higbee rose from her position as a rankless nurse paid considerably less than her male peers to become the second superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps.

 

She grew the NNC from to over nurses, served on multiple healthcare committees to prepare the Red Cross for the impacts of World War I, began training hospital corpsmen, and survived the Spanish flu epidemic. She also lobbied for expanded healthcare for military dependents, and formalized Navy nursing uniforms bearing the oak leaf and acorn over an anchor.
