After our early morning walks around Calle Crisologo and its historic houses, we wandered around Vigan’s other streets. The heritage buildings in Vigan are not limited to Calle Crisologo. Still, we were mildly surprised that there were so many other heritage buildings scattered all over the grid of 25 streets that make up the city’s historic quarter.
More heritage structures may be found in the series of streets parallel to Calle Crisologo namely A. Reyes, Plaridel, V. De Los Reyes Streets and Quirino Blvd. Additional ancestral houses may be found in the perpendicular roads connecting these streets such as Florentino, Bonifacio, Gen. Luna, Mabini and Salcedo Streets as well as Liberation Blvd. So, if you want to do an exhaustive tour of Vigan’s historic houses, make sure to visit these streets.
Locals continue to use these ancestral houses. Their usage is almost the same as by their owners during the 18th to 19th centuries. The ground floors are used for commercial purposes with the living quarters in the upper floors. Pre-Spanish colonial era houses were built using light materials like bamboo and nipa.
