The Naerum suburban district of Copenhagen, in Denmark, is the setting for one of the most visually appealing allotment gardens in the world. Søren Carl Theodor Marius Sørensen is considered one of the greatest landscape architects to have ever lived, and the oval gardens of Naerum are one of his most famous projects. In , 40 oval allotment gardens, each measuring approximately 25 × 15 m, were laid out on a rolling lawn, between public housing on one side and more traditional allotments on the other.
Owners were free to position their cottages, select the surrounding hedges, and lay out the interior of their plots, but Sørensen provided some directions, stressing that they were meant as a guide, not rules. Seventy later, and the oval gardens of Naerum are still one of the most beautiful attractions in the Danish capital.

Nærum, Denmark, are considered one of C. Th. Sørensen 's most important creations. In 40 oval allotment gardens, each measuring c &#; 15 m/80 &#; 50 ft, were laid out on a rolling lawn, a common green, in a fluid progression. The gardens are mostly placed so that the oval lies across the curves of the slope. This use of the rolling terrain, combined with the sweeps and curves of the hedges, accentuates the dynamic impression. The individual garden plots are enclosed compartments surrounded by hedges; their cottages may be situated in different ways, but comply with the overall plan. The hedges were originally intended to be both clipped and unclipped, using such species as hornbeam, hawthorn, privet, and roses, but today there are mostly privet and hawthorn, clipped in different heights and forms. A life as prolific as Carl Theodor Sørensen’s () is at best difficult to summarise. With regard to the history of junk playgrounds, his ideas became prominent in the late ’s when working on a proposal for the transformation of the Cottage Park in Klampenborg, north of Copenhagen into a family and children’s park.
The transformative proposal was created in collaboration with Carl Theodor Sørensen (Landscape Architect) and Hans Dragehjelm (School Teacher). The proposal featured numerous natural child play areas – it is here that you can see Sørensen’s interest and commitment to providing children opportunities for natural play. The proposal was titled “The Children’s Paradise” and was linked to Sørensen’s other works in the early ’s.
Unfortunately Sørensen and Dragehjelm’s “Children’s Paradise” was never realized and the local children’s play needs ignored. Instead the tennis club was expanded and the English style gardens kept.
In a journal article in Sørensen wrote: When we work as landscape architects, despite many explanatory models, design remains an obscure process of trial and error — who will clear up the error? — of ‘attitude’ and ‘intrinsic nature’ of morphology and performance models. C.T. Sørensen talked about inventions. The results. at least, are on view. Supposing we understand avant-garde landscape architecture the same way we do with architecture and the other arts as the realization of abstract ideas in this case of nature, ecology and society. Then designing should consequently be understood as the ‘invention’ of information systems or layers that overlap with existing elements. This must precede any thoughts on appearance or expression. Working the other way round can be seen as trite, as patronage, and as predetermining interpretations and even feelings.
