Asima Chatterjee was a renowned Indian chemist and was famous for her work in the field phytomedicine and organic chemistry. Her most distinctive work includes the invention of anti-malarial drug, development of anti-epileptic and research on vinca alkaloids.
She was born in a traditional Bengali film. She was excellent in her academics and after completion of her schooling; she obtained graduation degree from Scottish Church College in chemistry honors. She then obtained her post-graduate degree in organic chemistry and after which, she completed Ph.D. in Her research primarily focused on synthetic organic chemistry and chemistry of plant products. Asima Chatterjee was the first woman to be awarded a Doctor of Science by an Indian University - in , by the University of Calcutta. She was also the first woman to be elected as the General President of the Indian Science Congress, a premier institution that oversees scientific research. Asima’s maiden name was Mokerjee. She grew up in a middle-class household in Calcutta and was the oldest of two children of Dr Indra Narayan Mookerjee and his wife, Kamala Devi.
Her younger brother, Sarashi Ranjan Mookerjee, also came to known as a noteworthy surgeon, and collaborated with Asima in her research on medicinal plants. It was her father’s love for botany that piqued Asima’s interest in their medicinal properties.
