Guillielmo d'Olanda
Willem van Aelst (16 May – in or after ) was a Dutch Golden Age artist who specialized in still-life painting with flowers or game.
Van Aelst was born in Delft to a family of prominent city magistrates. He learned to paint from his uncle, the still-life painter Evert van Aelst. On 9 November he enrolled as a master of the Guild of Saint Luke at Delft.
Between and he lived in France. In Van Aelst travelled to Florence, where he served as court painter to Ferdinando II de' Medici, grand duke of Tuscany. Here he was known as Guillielmo d'Olanda. At this time, the grand duke also employed two fellow Dutchmen Matthias Withoos and Otto Marseus van Schrieck, the latter also a still-life painter who probably influenced Van Aelst's style. Ferdinando II publicly presented Van Aelst with a gold chain and medal, as a testimony of his approbation and an acknowledgement of his talents.
It has been conjectured that Van Aelst visited Rome where he became a member of the Bentvueghels, an association of mainly Dutc
Flowers and butterflies
Aelst Willem van
(Delft c. - Amsterdam? c. )
This work is a typical example of small paintings with natural, secular subjects, commonly found in Italian courts in the midth century. It depicts different flowers picked at various times of their short existence: while the tulips have just blossomed, several leaves on the thorny stems of a fading Damask rose seem nearly withered. The composition is enriched by horned and field pansies, a dangerous hornet and two butterflies – a large white and a painted lady – which together with the crystal vase allude to the themes of vanitas and fleeting time. On the right is depicted a Fritillaria orientalis, recognisable by the chequered pattern of its petals. This flower was held dear in the Flemish tradition; its seeds were diffused throughout Europe by Huguenots after they fled to England. The presence of this flower in paintings is in fact generally associated with escape and persecution.

Willem van Aelst
Eventually settling in Amsterdam, Willem van Aelst spent the early part of his career in Paris and Florence, in the latter city working for the brothers Cardinal Gian Carlo and Cardinal Leopoldo de’ Medici. He was a highly accomplished painter of various types of still lifes and among the first painters to depict hunting trophies.
Many artists followed his example, but few managed to equal his painterly skills or flair for balanced compositions. This painting is a prime example of the type of hunting still life for which he became famous. It exemplifies a taste for refined paintings that accompanied the tremendous increase in wealth in the Dutch Republic during the later 17th century. Although Van Aelst painted the work in Amsterdam, he reminds us of his Florentine past by signing with the Italian version of his first name (‘’).
