Peter was born on October 5, in Manhattan as Peter Delapp, the younger of the two sons born to John and Mina Reaume Delapp. Brother Philip was older by two years. Peter legally changed his surname to Brown after his mother married Albert "Bud" Brown. (His biological father died when Peter was four.) Peter grew up in a family of four boys, which included younger brothers Michael and Paul.
