Papa Midnite &#; a familiar face to &#;Hellblazer&#; fans &#; makes his first appearance on CONSTANTINE tonight&#;and his relationship with John is, well, complicated.
I spoke with CONSTANTINE guest star Michael James Shaw (Papa Midnite) about taking on the role&#;
Were you familiar with &#;Hellblazer&#;?
Michael James Shaw: I was not. I did read a lot of comic books when I was a kid…but &#;Hellblazer&#; wasn&#;t on my map. But I had seen the [CONSTANTINE] film with Keanu Reeves.
Did you read up about the character when you landed the role? Or did you want to start fresh?
MJS: I actually got a hold of the &#;Papa Midnite&#; origin &#;Hellblazer&#; prior to shooting, and I was [looking at that] in reference to who he was. And after that, I was able to get a stack of &#;Hellblazer&#; and Constantine books and dive into that.
What can you tease about his introduction in the series?
MJS: You&#;ll get a nice glimpse into his world, the texture of his world…and it&#;s very different from anything you&#;ve seen thus far on the show.

From executive producer David S. Goyer and showrunner Daniel Cerone, the NBC series Constantine, based on the wildly popular comic book series Hellblazer from DC Comics, is coming to its season conclusion on Friday the 13th. On Episode 13, called “Waiting for the Man,” John Constantine (Matt Ryan) and Zed (Angélica Celaya) return to New Orleans when Detective Jim Corrigan (Emmett Scanlan) asks for their help in the case of a missing girl. Meanwhile, Papa Midnite (Michael James Shaw) takes steps toward exacting his revenge on John, in ways that only Papa Midnite can.

Michael James Shaw has been cast in the recurring guest role of Papa Midnite, the voodoo king of New Orleans, in NBC's new horror-tinged fall series. Midnite is a formidable magical adversary for demon hunter John Constantine, played by series star Matt Ryan.
The show is based on the long-running Vertigo Comics series Hellblazer and DC Comics' current Constantine comic book, and Papa Midnite has long been a thorn in Constantine's side in the comics since his first appearance in Hellblazer No. 1 (). That relationship carries over into the TV series, though with evil forces rising on Earth, they might have to hug it out and become uneasy allies sooner than later.
Constantine premieres Oct. 24 (10 ET/PT) with a pilot directed by Neil Marshall. The cast also includes Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford and Angélica Celaya. Daniel Cerone, David S. Goyer and Mark Verheiden are the executive producers on the show.

'Constantine' Casts Michael James Shaw as Papa Midnite
Fans of the DC-based television series universe have a lot to look forward to this year. The CW's flagship hit series Arrow will return, along with the premiere of its spinoff The Flash, FOX will roll out the Batman prequel Gotham, and NBC is bringing the world a Hellblazer adaptation in Constantine.
The show debuts this October just a week before Halloween, starring Matt Ryan as the titular sorcerer - and judging from the trailers we've seen, creator Daniel Cerone (Dexter, The Mentalist) and pilot director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) are bringing a far more faithful adaptation of the famed DC/Vertigo character to the small screen than, say, the infamous Keanu Reeves-starring film. Still, like that oft-derided effort, the show will definitely feature the seminal Hellblazer character Papa Midnite.
