Ideological Effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus
“In such a way, the cinematic apparatus conceals its work and imposes an idealist ideology, rather than producing critical awareness in a spectator.”
Baudry sets up the questions he will answer throughout the rest of the text:
- How the “subject” is the active center of meaning.
- How the cinematic apparatus is actually more important for transcendentalism in the subject than the film itself.
- The hidden “work” of the cinematic apparatus, that is, the progression from the “objective reality” (what is filmed), through the intermediary (the camera), to the finished product (a reconstructed, but false, “objective reality”, not the “objective reality” itself, but instead a representation of it)
Baudry then discusses this “work”. This, he claims, is what distinguishes cinema as an art form. This process of transformation from “objective reality” to finished product. He asks, in this finished product is the “work” made evident, does viewing the final product bring about a “knowledge effect”, or in other words, a recognition of the apparatus, or is the “work” concealed?

Jean-Louis Baudry ( – ) was a French novelist, Tel Quelliterary editor, and psychoanalytic film theorist known for essays such as "Ideological Effects of the Basic Cinematographic Apparatus" () and "The Apparatus: Metapsychological Approaches to the Impression of Reality in Cinema" (), two essays which pioneered apparatus theory, a combination of Louis Althusser's concept of the Ideological State Apparatus and Jacques Lacan's theory of the mirror stage to analyse the cinema as an institution.
His influential ideas were critiqued and developed by film semioticianChristian Metz and feminist film theoristLaura Mulvey in the mids.

Jean-Louis Baudry est mort à Paris le 3 octobre, à l’âge de 85 ans. C’est aussi à Paris qu’il était né, en
Ami d’adolescence de Jean-René Huguenin et de Jean-Edern Hallier, il fit ses études au lycée Henri-IV puis à la faculté de médecine. Il choisit la chirurgie dentaire. Parallèlement à ce métier, Jean-Louis Baudry commence à publier en C’est d’abord un roman, de facture assez classique, proustienne dira-t-on, Le Pressentiment. Ce premier livre paraît au Seuil. A la fin de cette même année, en même temps que Marcelin Pleynet et Denis Roche, il entre au comité de la jeune revue Tel Quel, créée deux ans plus tôt. C’est dans la nouvelle collection de la revue qu’il publie, en , Les Images, davantage inscrit dans la modernité du Nouveau Roman et surtout des recherches du groupe animé par Philippe Sollers. Il qualifie lui-même son livre de « chanson de geste de la conscience ».

Deux articles de Jean-Louis Baudry (Effets idéologiques de l&#;appareil de base et Le Dispositif) ont contribué à la transformation de la théorie du cinéma. Si les films et le langage cinématographique ont fait l&#;objet de nombreuses recherches, on avait peu interrogé les effets spécifiques du cinéma sur le spectateur. C&#;est que ces effets avant de dépendre des films eux-mêmes relèvent de l&#;appareil cinématographique considéré dans son ensemble et des conditions de la projection. En mettant en jeu les données de la psychanalyse, Jean-Louis Baudry aboutit à la mise en évidence d&#;une &#;métapsychologie&#; du spectateur, qui permet de saisir la nature du désir dont le cinéma est le lieu.
