Poems about Filipino Culture

1. The Pearl of the Orient

This poem encapsulates the beauty of the Philippines, often dubbed &#;The Pearl of the Orient Seas&#;. It touches upon its scenic beauty, resilience, and unique identity.

Emerald hills, sun-kissed shores,

Beneath azure skies, folklore soars.

Rice terraces climb, reaching the clouds,

In the Pearl’s embrace, nature is unbound.

Valiant warriors, history&#;s song,

Where tales of bravery and love belong.

In every dance, in every tune,

Echoes the heart, the soul&#;s monsoon.

Islands many, yet one nation strong,

Harmony and unity, where all belong.

Glistening pearl amidst the vast blue,

Oh Philippines, to thee we stay true.

Author Ma Luisa Aguilar Igloria lets her credentials speak for her. In , she was chosen by former UK Poet Laureate Andrew Motion, Alice Oswald, and Jo Shapcott as the inaugural winner of the Resurgence Prize (UK), the world's first major award for ecopoetry (poetry with a strong ecological emphasis or message).

Igloria acknowledges her privileges as the only child of her lawyer father and a stay-at-home mother. "I was raised as an only child and my parents were completely invested in my education. They taught me to read when I was three and signed me up for piano lessons at around the same time".

"We weren't poor, but we weren't exactly wealthy. We got our first television set when I was nearly 10 years old, our first car when I was nearly out of high school," Igloria explained in an interview.

Originally from Baguio, Igloria settled in Virginia together with her four daughters. She was recently appointed as the 20th Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia ().

Pony Ride

At the emergency room,

trauma and tragedy slip in

and out of the door. Here

is a carousel of chances,

lifeline gliding and bobbing

in circles. Maybe we are all

clowns for even trying.

Sideshow oddities making

a mark under the great big top

of this cosmic joke. Applause

and lion’s roar, cannonballs

and dart-popped balloons.

We fill the quiet with

so much distraction.

More bodies continue

to remind this carnival room

of our fine fine flesh,

cotton candy tissues.

Every minute, pain.

Every minute, a wailing

that signals a soul

transcending the threshold.

And then a swift return

to speechlessness as if

in respect to mimes.

Sometimes peace

is a little pony ride

that comes to an end.

Wear This Shirt Inside Out

The ode to a t-shirt is but

an easy riddle: one way

to enter and three to exit.

You are good to go. Give in.

Here’s another one. Piles

in wardrobes and drawers

looking like sad dry lips, folds

mouthing the ancient plea,

Touch me, feel me, hold me

At the mall we reach for the sale rack.

Fifty percent off. Another for eighty.
