BETWEEN SUKAYNAH BINT AL-ḤUSAYN (D. /) AND FADWĀ ṬŪQĀN (D/): CRITICAL ELEMENTS IN FEMININE POETICAL AND CRITICAL TRADITION*

AMIDU SANNI & HAKEEM SALMON BETWEEN SUKAYNAH BINT AL-ḤUSAYN (D. /) AND FADWĀ ṬŪQĀN (D/): CRITICAL ELEMENTS IN FEMININE POETICAL AND CRITICAL TRADITION* Introduction The Umayyad poetical giant, al-Farazdaq (d. AH/CE) responded to a woman reciting poetry by saying: (Ghidhdhāmī ) Idhā ṣāḥati l-dajājatu ṣiyāḥa l-dīki fa-dhba-ḥūhā If a hen crows like a cock, slaughter her. This statement illustrates very eloquently both the implicit and explicit déjà vu reaction to feminine adventurism into literary practice, a field considered to be an exclusive male preserve right from the Islamic antiquity. The perspective has largely subsisted even more aggressively into the modern period, as can be illustrated with the following statement by ‘Abbās Maḥ-mūd al-‘Aqqād (d. ) in his preface to the first published edition of al-Suyūṭī’s (d. /) anthology of women poets, namely, his Nuzhat al-julasā’ where he says: Qad tuḥsinu l-mar’atu kitābata l-qiṣaṣ, wa-qad tuḥsinu l-tamthīla wa-l-raqṣa, wa-ḍurūba l-funū ni l-jamīla, wa-lākinnahā lā tuḥsinu l-shi‘ra, wa-lam yashtamil tāri

Fadwa Tuqan: A Romantic Feminist Poet and Reluctant Political Witness

Fadwa Hafez Tuqan is perhaps the most famous and well-loved woman poet in Palestine. Fadwa would have loved to have kept writing poetry about personal and social subjects, but the political earthquakes of and turned her away from this course toward politics. Mahmoud Darwish, Palestine’s most eminent poet, considers the “ earthquake” to have made her stray away from her poetic bounds.

In his eulogy, “Fadwa,” published in the latest issue of Al Karmel journal, Darwish masterfully captures her predicament of not being fully content with this change: “What does the poet do at the time of catastrophe? Suddenly the poet has to get out of himself to the outside, and poetry is the witness.” He adds, “She visited us in Haifaa hostage seeking hostages, and read us her first poem about the new ordeal: ‘I will not cry.’ But she was crying like a dove. Love songs ceased to be the answer to hate and inhumanity – to the condition that prevents words from continuing their previous escape from their trap, to preventing the continuing search for ‘pure poetry,’ and to preventing the character from revealing his personality.”

A Mountainous Journey: A Poet's Autobiography

May 9,
This was a highly interesting and unexpectedly gripping autobiography, and despite its many flaws I found myself totally engrossed in the story of Fadwa Tuqan's life - no matter how disjointly told.

Beautifully and very lyrically written you can just tell that the author has a way with words, which she knows to use expertly to make the reader feel deeply her grief, desperation, and melancholy, as well as relate to the things she had to go through and the odds she had to face as a freethinking female writer in a very restrictive and traditional Arab setting.

No matter how poetically written, however, this work also has quite some recurring flaws regarding the book's structure: For one, the timeline is not as chronological as it should be in a biography, which makes events rather hard to follow at times. Furthermore, some chapters are intensely repetitive and the points the author wants to make often only become clear once the reader has a lot more context a handful of chapters later. These flaws of consistency severely hampered my reading enjoyment of the book, though I would still consider this a worthwhile read for w
