Hegel, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich
German idealist philosopher; b. Stuttgart, Aug. 27, ; d. Berlin, Nov. 14, Possessed of great speculative powers, Hegel developed German idealism into an absolute system of knowledge that conceived all of reality as the self-unfolding of the Absolute.
Life and Works. The son of an official in Stuttgart, Hegel was given a stanch Protestant and humanistic education. At 18 he entered the theological school at the University of Tübingen, where he studied philosophy (&#x;90) and theology (&#x;93). He was a close friend of F. Hölderlin (&#x;) and F. schelling, and was influenced more by the study of Greek antiquity, contemporary philosophy (I. Kant, F. H. Jacobi, and J. C. F. Schiller), and the stirrings of the French Revolution than by the study of evangelical theology. In he was a private tutor, first at Bern and later at Frankfurt am Main; at about this time he composed his so-called Theologischen Jugendschriften (ed. H. Nohl, Tübingen ), in which he opposed the problems of the philosophy of religion to those of religious instruction and clarified his own philosophical position.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, the German idealist philosopher, was born at Stuttgart and entered the theological seminary at the University of Tübingen in Among his fellow students were Friedrich von Schelling and the poet Friedrich Hölderlin. After graduating he became, in , a resident tutor in the home of an aristocratic family at Bern, and in he took a similar post in Frankfurt. In he went to Jena, where Schelling had succeeded Johann Gottlieb Fichte as professor of philosophy and was developing an idealist philosophy of nature and metaphysics. Having been accepted as a teacher at Jena on the strength of his dissertation, De Orbitis Planetarum (), Hegel collaborated with Schelling in editing the philosophical journal Kritisches Journal der Philosophie and published his first book, Differenz des Fichte'schen und Schelling'schen Systems der Philosophie ().
